The Wonders of Saskatchewan
Sitting on over 227,000 square miles of forest and grasslands, the
Canadian province of Saskatchewan is the
only one to have no natural boundaries and is also landlocked. With
just over 1 million people, almost one
quarter of these living in Saskatoon, the largest city and almost
another quarter living in the capital of
Regina, the province received its name from the Cree Indians who
called it kisiskaciwani-sipiy, or the swift
flowing river. In the north, the Lake Athabasca Sand Dunes, biggest
active sand dunes above the 58th parallel
in the world sit amidst the forested land. In the south, where the
grasslands are, are the Great Sand Hills, the Killdeer Badlands and
the Cypress Hills; which are part of the Grasslands National Park
system.
The province was originally home to many various Indian nations
among them: Sioux, Cree, Algonquin, Athabaskan, Saulteaux and
Astina, with the first European Henry Kelsey in 1690 coming up the
Saskatchewan River to trade furs. Hudson Bay Company set up shop at
the Cumberland House in 1774. Scientific exploration was done in the
mid 1800s in the prairie area of the province. The Canadian
government started the North-West territories to take care of the
huge area of land between British Columbia and Manitoba. This helped
initiate treaties with the First Nations as the Indian nations were
referred to.
The Canadian Pacific Railroad was built during the 1880s, which
helped the land populate. The Dominion Land Survey divided the land
into parcels and gave it away to anyone willing to settle there.
After the battle of Little Big Horn, Sitting Bull and many thousands
of his nation escaped to Wood Mountain, in 1876. In 1885, the North
West Mounted Police built many forts and posts in the Saskatchewan
area; Fort Walsh in Cypress Hills and Wood Mountain Post in the
middle of the province near the American border.
Saskatchewan began a Canadian province in 1905. With the passage of
the Homestead Act, immigrants were given a quarter square mile area
to farm and settle, with another quarter when it had been done.
Although they were miles from any size town, the frontier life
difficult and the great hardships of building a home and farm, a
successful farming community was begun and flourished. The first
yearly Canadian Western Agribition was started in Regina in 1970 and
is one of the best livestock show in North America.
The province produces about 45% of Canada's grains, including;
barley, lentils, canola, wheat, oats, peas, rye, flax and canary
seed. It is also involved in hunting, fishing and forestry, but
agriculture remains the biggest. It is a large grower of beef cows,
with Alberta being the only province to out produce it. Over the
decades, it has become a leading exporter of uranium and potash;
helping the mining industry grow. Oil and natural gas is produced
and adds to the overall economy.

Saskatchewan Tours
One of the most sensational tours available to visitors is the
trip to the Athabsca Sand Dunes in northern Saskatchewan. These
tours are so spectacular that there are referred to as expeditions.
Completely planned and outfitted, you will travel either by plane or
4 wheel vehicle. Home to plant species found no where else in the
world, this area is the authentic wilderness and there are no nearby
towns or communities. Described as primeval, you will look for
elements or remains of the original Athabascan tribes and roam the
desert like landscapes. Park regulations allow for only paddling or
hiking around the park. One tour does involve the use of canoes on
the Carswell and William Rivers heading into the Thompson
Bay/William River region. Some of these fantastic dunes are over 200
feet high and will mesmerize you into dreamlike states. It is one of
the most exciting tours we have seen offered over the years.
Another very exciting tour involves horseback riding and hiking to
follow the migration of grisly bears following the disappearing
snowline as summer appears. You will watch the grizzlies as they
mate after a week long courtship, graze in open meadows, and rub on
trees. It is a special sight with excitement every step of the way
whether riding or hiking. Or if you would prefer doing a bit of
work, you can thrill to the old west by helping a working ranch in
the hills of Qu-Apelle Valley. A rather unique and unusual tour is
offered in Louis Riel Trail, Saskatchewan; the chance to visit an
authentic working Hutterite colony. Called the Arm River Hutterite
Colony, these friendly, hospitable Christians live in a communal
environment that is quite different than many others. Formed over a
thousand years ago by Jacob Hutter, they believe in the original
practice of community living started by the disciples after Christ's
death and resurrection. This is a relaxing informal gathering that
allows you to watch and sometimes participate in the work and
creation of the truly remarkable people.
At the Chaplin Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve, over 30 kinds
of birds, many on the endangered list visit the lake; which is the
second biggest saline body of water in Canada, spread across 15,000
acres.
With the opportunity to camp, hike, bike, backpack, horseback
riding, boating and canoeing tours; airplane, skydiving and zipline
tours; this province is a wonderful place to enjoy the boundless
thrills of nature. With over 145 fishing trips, 127 hunting trips in
season, houseboats, kayaking, rafting, hot springs and tours,
resorts and spas; you will learn to relax in another environment
that caters to your self and your spirit for adventure. They have
bike tours that will take you slowly past the awesome views of
scenery, bus and motor coach tours, limo tours, guided and unguided
walking tours through historical areas of the early towns and
settlements, cross-country skiing, dog sled and kennel tours,
snowshoeing and snowmobiling tours. There are special tours that
will take you to the villages of the Indian nations, farm tours, and
industry and factory tours.
